Treatments and therapies

Hypnotherapy is recognised by the British Medical Association, the American Medical Association and by NICE, the National Institute of Clinical Excellence.  These therapies have been recognised to be a safe, effective route to alleviating a wide range of problems in just a few hours of treatment.

Techniques

As a therapist I use an eclectic approach to each client's individual needs.  That means bringing in elements of proven psychotherapies and applying them before, during and after trance work.  Hypnotherapy can become much more effective when hypnosis is combined with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Neurolinguistic Programming.  But what does it involve?

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is a collaboration between client and therapist. The client brings an issue to their therapist, explains what it is they want to work on, and - along with other therapeutic techniques - the therapist induces a state of hypnosis.

There are many ways the therapist can induce trance and the method used is chosen to suit each client.  When the hypnotherapist sees that the client is in trance, suggestions and visualisations can be used to focus the client on achieving their goals.

What's it like?

This is the most common question a hypnotherapist is asked: What is it like?  It's very relaxing.  You can hear everything that's going on around you during trance and you can respond in a natural way to anything that might happen. You are completely in control.  And you're not asleep either; you are fully alert.

Trance is a state of profound physical and mental relaxation and, at its conclusion, you can feel refreshed and alert.  It is possible to use trance simply as a way to find deep relaxation.  But when you are so wonderfully relaxed you are also more receptive to helpful suggestions.

How long will it take?

Usually each session with your hypnotherapist will last about 50 minutes.  It is private and confidential.  At the first session a treatment plan will be agreed between client and therapist and will often include a series of from three to six sessions.

Smoking cessation is usually dealt with in a single 90-minute session.  Dental pain management - the alleviation of toothache, for instance - and diagnosed headaches are usually dealt with in 45 minutes, again, in a single session.
